Kells Water facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Kells Water is a small river located in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It flows through places like Moorfields and the village of Kells. This river is a tributary to the River Main, which means it flows into the River Main.

The Kells Water begins its journey high up near Glenwherry. It's actually a continuation of another river called the Glenwhirry River. Eventually, the Kells Water joins the River Main, and the Main then flows into Lough Neagh, which is the largest lake in the British Isles. A small village named Kellswater is also found nearby. An old stone bridge crosses the Kells Water, connecting Kells with the village of Connor.

Fishing in Kells Water

The Kells Water is a special "nursery river" for fish. This means it's a safe and important place where certain fish lay their eggs. Salmon, trout, and a type of trout called dollaghan all use the Kells Water to spawn. They usually do this in November and December.

History of the River's Use

In the past, the Kells Water was very important for powering local industries. Its flowing water was used to run many linen mills and other types of factories. Even today, the river's water is still used in some industrial processes. For example, a dye works factory near Connor uses the water in its operations.

Culture and the Kells Water

The Kells Water has also inspired local culture. The Kellswater Flute Band was started in 1947. This band is located about four miles south of Ballymena. Interestingly, the band is named after the Kells Water river, not the area where they are based. The river is even featured on the band's crest, along with the old bridge.

The river is also famous because it's mentioned in a well-known song called Bonnie Kellswater. This song talks about the beauty and pleasures found around the river.

Bonnie Kellswater

Here's a health unto you bonnie Kellswater, it's there you'll get the pleasures of life, it's there you'll get fishing and fowling, and a bonnie wee lassie for your wife.

Sometimes the Kellswater runs muddy, but to me it will always run clear, and when e'er I sit down for a study, it reminds me o'them that's no here.

So here's a health unto you bonnie Kellswater, it's there you'll get the pleasures of life, it's there you'll get fishing and fowling, and a bonnie wee lass for your wife.
