Discover Kelly's Steps in Hobart

Kelly's Steps are a special part of Hobart's history. They help people travel between two very different but important parts of the city. At the top, you find the charming, old streets of Battery Point. At the bottom, you reach Salamanca Place, known for its markets and waterfront.

A Journey Through Time

James Kelly built these steps between 1839 and 1840. Back then, Battery Point was high up on a cliff. This cliff looked over the busy wharves of Sullivans Cove. The steps were carved right into the stone of the cliffs.

The large warehouses you see today along Salamanca Place were built using stone. This stone was taken from the very cliffs where the steps were made. The steps lead directly up to Kelly Street in Battery Point. At the bottom, a small path called Kelly's Lane takes you to Salamanca Place.

Who Was James Kelly?

James Kelly was an important figure in early Australian history. He was known as an explorer and a whaler. Whalers were people who hunted whales for their oil and other products. Kelly played a big role in the development of Hobart's waterfront. Building these steps was one of his lasting contributions to the city.
