Kelvinbridge subway station is a busy train station in Glasgow, Scotland. It serves the areas of Woodlands, Woodside, and Hillhead. The station gets its name from the River Kelvin bridge, which is very close by.

It is one of two stations that serve Kelvingrove Park. The other station is Kelvinhall.

Station History

Kelvinbridge station first opened its doors in 1896. This was when the entire Glasgow Subway system began operating.

The station closed for a big update in 1977. It reopened in 1980 after being made more modern. Even after the updates, it still has its original island platform design. An island platform is a single platform with tracks on both sides. Kelvinbridge is the busiest station in the Glasgow Subway that still uses this kind of platform.

Station Features

Kelvinbridge station is the deepest station in the Glasgow Subway network. This is because it is built very close to the River Kelvin.

How to Enter the Station

When the station first opened, you entered through a building called a tenement block. This was on South Woodside Road. To get to Great Western Road, you had to use an outdoor metal staircase. This staircase went down from the bridge itself.

After the station was updated, a new entrance was built. This new entrance is at ground level. It has a ticket hall and a glass-enclosed escalator. This escalator takes you directly to the main entrance on Great Western Road.

The old station entrance is now used as an emergency exit. You can spot it by its red doors at the bottom of the metal staircase. There are also "keep clear" signs around it.

Parking and Facilities

The station has a car park for people who drive there. This car park was built on the site of an old goods yard. This goods yard used to be part of the Kelvinbridge railway station on a different train line.
