Kendall is a small, unincorporated community in Hamilton County, Kansas, United States. This means it's a settlement that doesn't have its own local government. Kendall is located near U.S. Route 50, about 12 miles (19 km) southeast of the city of Syracuse.
History of Kendall
Kendall has an interesting connection to the history of the American West. A famous frontiersman named Charles "Buffalo" Jones played a part in its story. A frontiersman was someone who explored and lived in the wild, undeveloped areas of a country.
Charles Jones was one of the people who helped start Garden City in 1879. Later, in 1886, he set out from Kendall on an important mission. He went on a special hunt to try and capture the few remaining wild buffalo. His goal was to save them from becoming completely extinct, which means disappearing forever. This effort helped protect the buffalo population.
Education in Kendall
Even though Kendall is a small community, it is part of a larger school system. Students from Kendall attend public schools managed by the Syracuse USD 494 school district. This district is based in the nearby city of Syracuse.
Years ago, Kendall had its own schools, including Kendall High School. However, these schools were closed due to something called "school unification." This happens when smaller school districts combine to form a larger one, often to share resources and offer more programs. The mascot for Kendall High School was the Kendall Bobcats.
