Kennebunk River facts for kids
The Kennebunk River is a beautiful river in southern Maine, United States. It is about 17.6 miles (28.3 kilometers) long. This river flows through quiet, countryside areas southwest of Portland. Finally, it empties into the big Atlantic Ocean.
Exploring the Kennebunk River
The Kennebunk River starts in central York County. It begins where two smaller streams, Carlisle Brook and Lords Brook, meet. This meeting point is in the town of Lyman. Lords Brook itself flows out of Kennebunk Pond, also located in Lyman.
River's Journey to the Ocean
From its start, the Kennebunk River generally flows towards the southeast. On its way, it passes under major roads like Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 1. The river then flows past the center of Kennebunkport.
When the Kennebunk River reaches Kennebunkport, it becomes wide and deep enough for boats. This means it is "navigable." The river then flows into the Atlantic Ocean. This happens about half a mile (1 kilometer) downstream from the center of Kennebunkport.
