Kenneth James William Mackay, 3rd Earl of Inchcape (born December 27, 1917, died March 17, 1994), was an important businessman and a noble in the United Kingdom. He inherited the title of Earl of Inchcape in 1939 after his father passed away. During the Second World War, he served in the British Army, reaching the rank of Lieutenant and later Major with the 12th Royal Lancers and the 27th Lancers.

His Early Life and Education

Kenneth Mackay went to two famous schools. First, he attended Eton College, a well-known boarding school. After that, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, which is part of the University of Cambridge.

Leading Big Companies

Kenneth Mackay held many important positions in large companies. He was a key leader at P&O, a very large shipping company. He was a director there from 1957 to 1983. He also served as the Chairman from 1973 to 1983 and Chief Executive from 1978 to 1981.

He also led Inchcape & Company Limited as Chairman and Chief Executive from 1958 to 1982. This company was founded by his grandfather.

Beyond these roles, he was involved with other important groups:

  • He chaired the Committee for Middle East Trade (COMET) from 1963 to 1965.
  • He was President of the Royal Society for India, Pakistan and Ceylon from 1970 to 1976.
  • He served as President of the General Council of British Shipping from 1976 to 1977.

His Family Life

Kenneth Mackay was the son of Kenneth Mackay, 2nd Earl of Inchcape. His mother was Joan Moriarty. He also had a half-brother named Simon Mackay, Baron Tanlaw.

He was married twice. His first marriage was to Aline Thorn Pease in 1941. They had three children together:

  • Lucinda Louise Mackay, born in 1941.
  • Peter Mackay, 4th Earl of Inchcape, born in 1943. He later inherited his father's title.
  • James Jonathan Thorn Mackay, born in 1947.

After divorcing in 1954, he married Caroline Harrison in 1965. They had three sons:

  • Anthony Mackay, born in 1967.
  • Shane Mackay, born in 1973.
  • Ivan Mackay, born in 1976.

In 1969, his second wife, Countess Inchcape, made history. She became the very first woman to be an underwriting Name at Lloyd's of London. This meant she could take on insurance risks.
