Keno Province facts for kids
Keno Province (毛野国, Keno kuni), also known as Kenu, was an important area in Japan a long, long time ago, even before the Nara period. Think of it like a very old region or state. Keno was located in what we now call Tochigi Prefecture and Gunma Prefecture.
A Look Back: Keno's History
Before the early 700s, during a time called the Taihō reforms, the large area known as Keno was split into two smaller parts. These new areas were named Kōzuke Province and Shimotsuke Province. This change happened because of new rules and ways of organizing the country that were put in place during the Taihō Code period. The Taihō Code was a set of laws that helped the government better control and manage different parts of Japan. So, Keno Province didn't disappear, but it became two separate provinces instead.
