Kensington was founded around 1887. It officially became a city in 1900. The city was once located along the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, which was an important railway line. The first post office in Kensington opened in January 1888, helping the community connect with the rest of the country.

Education in Kensington

Students in Kensington attend schools in the Thunder Ridge USD 110 public school district. This district was formed in 2008 when two older districts, West Smith County USD 238 and Eastern Heights USD 324, joined together. The Thunder Ridge High School sports teams are known as the Thunder Ridge Longhorns. Before the school districts combined, the mascot for Kensington High School was the Kensington Goldbugs.
