Kent Schoolfield (born September 3, 1946) is an American former college football player and coach. He played as a wide receiver for the Florida A&M University Rattlers in Tallahassee. After his college career, he was chosen by the New England Patriots in the 1970 NFL draft. Schoolfield later became a successful football coach. He was the head football coach at Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley, Georgia from 1997 to 2002. During his time there, his team had a great record of 48 wins and 21 losses.

Playing Days: A Wide Receiver

From 1965 to 1969, Kent Schoolfield played college football for the Florida A&M Rattlers. He was a wide receiver, which is a player who catches passes from the quarterback. His skills on the field were noticed, leading to him being drafted into the NFL.

Coaching Career: Leading Teams

After his playing days, Schoolfield became a football coach. He coached at several universities, helping players improve their skills.

Early Coaching Roles

Kent Schoolfield started his coaching career in 1976. He coached wide receivers for the Florida State Seminoles until 1980. He then coached wide receivers at North Carolina A&T in 1981 and New Mexico State in 1982. From 1983 to 1984, he coached wide receivers for the Pittsburgh Panthers.

Becoming an Offensive Coordinator

Later, Schoolfield took on more responsibility as an offensive coordinator. This role means he was in charge of the team's offensive plays and strategies. He was the offensive coordinator for his old team, Florida A&M, from 1989 to 1992. He also coached running backs for Temple from 1993 to 1994 and was the offensive coordinator for James Madison from 1995 to 1996. In 2004, he returned to North Carolina A&T as their offensive coordinator.

Head Coach at Fort Valley State

Kent Schoolfield's biggest coaching role was as the head coach for the Fort Valley State Wildcats. He led the team for six seasons, from 1997 to 2002.

Under Coach Schoolfield, the Fort Valley State Wildcats had a very successful period.

  • In 1998, the team had an impressive 11–2 record. They even made it to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals.
  • In 1999, they won the SIAC championship, sharing the title. They finished with a 10–2 record and played in the NCAA Division II First Round.
  • In 2001, they won another SIAC championship, again sharing the title. Their record was 8–3, and they also played in the NCAA Division II First Round.

Overall, during his time as head coach at Fort Valley State, Kent Schoolfield led his team to 48 wins and only 21 losses. He helped them win two conference championships.
