The Kentucky River Museum is a fascinating place to learn about the history of the Kentucky River. It is located in Boonesborough, Kentucky, right inside Fort Boonesborough State Park.

About the Museum

The Kentucky River Museum first opened its doors in 2002. It is housed in a very unique building. This building used to be the home of the person who operated Lock 10. It also served as a storage and maintenance building for the lock.

What is a River Lock?

The Kentucky River has a series of special structures called locks. These locks are like water elevators for boats. They help boats move up or down the river when the water level changes. There were originally fourteen of these locks built along the Kentucky River.

Who Built and Runs the Locks?

The first ten locks (from Lock 5 to Lock 14) were built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This is a group that helps manage many of America's waterways. Today, the ten locks that are highest up the river are managed by the Kentucky River Authority. This group makes sure the locks continue to work properly.
