Kerry Cooks, born on March 28, 1974, is an American college football coach and former player. He currently works as a defensive assistant for Rice University, a role he started in 2024.

About Kerry Cooks
Kerry Cooks was born in Dallas, Texas. He went to the University of Iowa and was a captain for their football team. He is married and has two children. In 2013, he was honored by being added to the Irving Independent School District Hall of Fame.
Playing Football
Kerry Cooks played professional football after college. The Minnesota Vikings first drafted him in 1998. Later that year, he played for the Green Bay Packers. He also played for the Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL. After his time in the NFL, he played for the Chicago Enforcers in the XFL in 2001.
Coaching Career
After playing, Cooks started coaching football. He began at the high school level.
Early Coaching Roles
In 2003, Cooks joined the Kansas State Wildcats as a graduate assistant. This means he helped the team while also studying. After that, he coached defensive backs at Western Illinois and Minnesota.
Coaching at Big Universities
Cooks spent four seasons coaching defensive backs at the University of Wisconsin. From 2010 to 2014, he was the secondary coach at the University of Notre Dame. In 2012, he also became a Co-defensive Coordinator there. This meant he helped lead the team's defense.
In 2015, Bob Stoops hired Cooks to coach the secondary at the University of Oklahoma. Later, in 2019, he joined Texas Tech as their safeties coach.
Recent Coaching Positions
In 2022, Cooks moved to LSU to coach the team's safeties. On January 3, 2024, Head Coach Brian Kelly announced that Cooks would leave LSU before the 2024 season. He then joined Rice University as a defensive assistant.
