History of Kersey
The first people to settle in this area arrived in 1810. They started a community called Centreville. Later that same year, a man named William Kersey built a gristmill and a sawmill there. A gristmill grinds grain into flour, and a sawmill cuts logs into lumber. Because of William Kersey's mills, the settlement was renamed "Kersey."
At that time, Kersey was part of Clearfield County. Elk County did not exist yet. In the early days, the main jobs in Kersey were related to cutting lumber from trees and mining coal.
