Kerstin Jeppsson was born in Nyköping, Sweden. She loved music from a young age. She went to the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. There, she studied how to compose music. Her teacher was Maurice Karkoff.
She received a special scholarship to continue her studies. This took her to the Kraków Conservatory. In Kraków, she learned more about composing. Her teachers included Krzysztof Meyer and Krzysztof Penderecki. She also studied conducting with Jozef Radwan. Conducting means leading a group of musicians.
Kerstin also studied in the United States. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1979. This was from the California Institute of the Arts in Santa Clarita. She studied composition with Mel Powell. She also continued her conducting studies with Daniel Schulman.
