Ketwurst is a special kind of hot dog that was first made in East Germany, also known as the German Democratic Republic. The name "Ketwurst" is a mix of the words Ketchup and Wurst, which is the German word for "sausage". It became a popular fast food in East Berlin.
What is Ketwurst?
Ketwurst is a unique take on the classic hot dog. It uses a special, larger sausage called a Bockwurst. This sausage is heated in water until it's ready to eat.
How Ketwurst is Made
Making a Ketwurst is a bit different from a regular hot dog. First, a long bread roll is used. A hot metal rod is pushed into the roll to create a perfect hole inside. Then, the warm sausage is dipped into ketchup. Finally, the ketchup-covered sausage is placed inside the prepared hole in the roll. This makes it easy to eat on the go!
The Story Behind Ketwurst
The Ketwurst was created around 1977 or 1978. It was invented at the State Gastronomical Research Center in East Germany. At that time, many people were visiting the Berlin TV Tower. The restaurants there couldn't serve everyone quickly enough. So, a new, easy-to-eat take-away food was needed.
The Ketwurst became a symbol of East German fast food. However, before German reunification (when East and West Germany became one country again), you mostly found Ketwurst only in the center of Berlin. It was not widely available in other parts of East Germany.
