Kevin L. Boyce (born October 5, 1971) is an American politician. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Currently, he serves as the President of the Franklin County Board of Commissioners.

Before this, he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives. He represented the 25th District from 2012 to 2016. He also served on the Columbus City Council. From 2009 to 2010, he was the 47th Ohio State Treasurer. In 2016, he was chosen by the Democratic Party to run for a seat on the Franklin County Board of Commissioners. He won that election and was re-elected for a second term in 2020.

Learning and Education

Kevin Boyce finished high school at Columbus East High School in 1990. He then went to the University of Toledo. In 1995, he earned a degree in political science. Later, in 2004, he received a master's degree in Public Administration from Central Michigan University.

Early Career and Public Service

Before becoming a politician, Kevin Boyce worked to help students. He was the leader of the KnowledgeWorks Foundation. This group helps high school students get ready for college. He also led the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus from 1997 to 1999.

Boyce helped manage a political campaign in 1998. From 1999 to 2000, he was a top assistant for the Minority Caucus in the Ohio House of Representatives.

Serving on Columbus City Council

On September 11, 2000, Kevin Boyce was chosen to join the Columbus City Council. He was elected by voters in 2001 and again in 2005. On the council, he became the President pro Tempore. He also led the Finance and Zoning Committees.

Becoming Ohio State Treasurer

In December 2008, Governor Ted Strickland chose Kevin Boyce to be the Ohio State Treasurer. He took office on January 8, 2009. This made him the first African-American Democrat to hold a statewide office in Ohio.

As Treasurer, Boyce managed the state's money. He made some changes, like hiring a bank to process state checks. He believed this would save the state money.

Running for Treasurer Again

Boyce ran for the Treasurer's job in the 2010 election. However, he lost to Josh Mandel.

After leaving office, Boyce was honored by the National Council of Negro Women in 2004. He was also recognized by the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity in 2004. They saw him as a good role model for young men.

Serving in the Ohio House of Representatives

In 2012, a state representative resigned. Kevin Boyce was chosen to take his place in the Ohio House of Representatives. He was sworn in on May 6, 2012. Later that year, he won his first full term. He received a large majority of the votes.

In 2014, Boyce was re-elected for a second term. He also became the Minority Whip. This is an important leadership role for his political party. He also led a special committee focused on Minority Affairs.

Leading Franklin County Commissioners

In March 2016, Kevin Boyce ran for the Franklin County, Ohio Board of Commissioners. He won the primary election against the person who held the job before him. The local Democratic Party supported Boyce in this election. He then won the general election in November 2016.

On November 3, 2020, Boyce was re-elected to the Franklin County Board of Commissioners. He is currently the President of the Board.
