Kevin Girard Murray (born March 12, 1960) is an American lawyer and former politician. He made history as the first person to serve in the California State Assembly at the same time as his father, Willard H. Murray Jr..
Education and Early Career
Kevin Murray went to California State University, Northridge. There, he earned a degree in Business Administration. He continued his studies at Loyola Marymount University. He received a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 1983. Later, in 1987, he earned a law degree from Loyola Law School.
Before becoming a politician, Murray worked as a lawyer. He helped people with legal issues related to entertainment, real estate, and insurance. He also advised artists in the entertainment business.
Serving in the California State Assembly
From 1994 to 1998, Kevin Murray was an assemblyman in the California State Assembly. He represented the 47th district, which is a part of Los Angeles, California. As a member of the Democratic Party, he led the Transportation Committee. This committee works on laws about roads, public transit, and other ways people move around.
Serving in the California State Senate
After his time in the Assembly, Murray became a senator in the California State Senate. He represented the 26th district, which includes Culver City, California.
During his time as a senator, he held several important leadership roles. He was the chair of the Appropriations Committee, which handles how the state's money is spent. He also chaired the Transportation Committee again. Murray led the Democratic Caucus and the California Legislative Black Caucus. He also served on the California Film Commission, which supports the film industry in the state.
Senator Murray was a strong supporter of people working in the entertainment industry. He worked to improve their contracts and make sure they were paid fairly. He retired from the Senate in 2006 because of term limits. Term limits mean a politician can only serve for a certain number of years.
