A Look Back at Keysville's History
How Keysville Started
Keysville has an interesting past! It was first settled in the 1870s. A person named Daniel McQueen Blue was important in starting this community. The name "Keysville" was chosen to honor General David Key, who was the US postmaster general at that time.
Growth and Change Over Time
By 1880, Keysville had grown quite a bit. It had more than 500 people living there, making it the second-largest community in Hillsborough County. Only Tampa was bigger! In the late 1800s, you could even catch a passenger train to Keysville.
However, things changed. The area had a lot of timber (trees used for wood), but once most of the trees were cut down, the community started to shrink. It wasn't as busy as it used to be.
A New Beginning with Phosphate
In the early 1900s, Keysville saw a small comeback. This was because many phosphate mines opened nearby. Phosphate is a mineral used to make fertilizers, which help plants grow. These mines brought new jobs and people to the area, giving Keysville a fresh start.
