History of Khairpur City
Khairpur has a rich history, especially linked to the Talpur dynasty. This ruling family was started in 1783 by Mir Fateh Ali Khan. He became the first ruler, or Rais, of Sindh after winning a battle against the Kalhoras.
Early Rulers and British Influence
After Mir Sohrab Khan Talpur, who founded the Khairpur branch of the family, passed away, his oldest son Mir Rustam 'Ali Khan took over in 1811. He ruled until 1842. Then, his younger brother, Mir Ali Murad, became the ruler.
Mir Ali Murad helped the British in their military campaigns between 1845 and 1847. However, he was later accused of working against the British in 1851–1852. Because of this, the British East India Company took away most of his lands in upper Sindh. The land he was left with was mainly Khairpur city and the areas right around it.
During the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857, Ali Murad supported the British. He stopped rebels from taking over the jail and money storage in Shikarpur. This helped him regain the trust of the British. In 1866, the British promised to recognize his future successors as the rightful rulers of Khairpur.
Later Rulers and Modern Changes
Ali Murad's oldest son had died before him, so his second son, Mir Faiz Muhammad Khan, became the ruler. He ruled until 1909. His son, Mir Imam Bakhsh Khan Talpur, took over next. He helped the British during World War I. For his help, he was given the special title of Lieutenant Colonel in 1918.
Mir Imam Bakhsh Khan died in 1921. His Highness Mir Ali Nawaz Khan then became the ruler. During his time, a system called the Cherr system was ended. This system involved people being made to work without pay. New canals were also built to help with watering crops.
