Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (born 8 January 1982) is the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. He was given this important role on March 29, 2023. He is the oldest son of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is the third President of the United Arab Emirates.

Early Life and Education

Sheikh Khaled is the oldest son of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the current president of the United Arab Emirates. His family, the Al Nahyan, is the ruling family of Abu Dhabi. His mother is Sheikha Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan.

Khaled has a younger brother named Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Theyab is also involved in important roles, like being the chairman of the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince's Court.

Sheikh Khaled studied at Arizona State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Political Science in 2004. Later, in 2007, he received a master's degree from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service.

Career and Public Service

Important Government Roles

Sheikh Khaled has held several key positions in the government. In 2016, he was made the head of national security. The next year, in 2017, he became the deputy national security adviser.

On March 29, 2023, he was appointed as the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. At the same time, he also became the chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council. Before these roles, he was a member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office.

Board Memberships

Sheikh Khaled is part of several important boards that help guide Abu Dhabi's future.

  • He is a member of Abu Dhabi's Supreme Council for Financial and Economic Affairs.
  • He serves on the board of directors for the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).
  • He is also on the board of directors for the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA).

He also leads several other important groups:

  • He is the chairman of the UAE Genomics Council.
  • He chairs the executive committee for ADNOC's board of directors.

Boosting the Economy

Sheikh Khaled has led major plans to help Abu Dhabi's economy grow.

  • He oversaw the "Ghadan 21" program, a large plan launched in 2019. This program invested 50 billion AED (about 13.6 billion USD) over three years to boost development through people, business, and new ideas.
  • In June 2022, he started the Abu Dhabi Industrial Strategy. This plan aims to grow the emirate's industrial sector to 172 billion AED (about 46.8 billion USD) by 2031. It also plans to create 13,600 new jobs and increase non-oil exports by 143%.
  • He supports Abu Dhabi Finance Week, an event that brings together financial leaders.
  • After becoming Crown Prince in May 2023, Sheikh Khaled approved a large plan to build 76,000 homes for citizens in Abu Dhabi over five years. This project will also create jobs and help the economy.

Supporting Innovation

Innovation is a key focus for Sheikh Khaled.

  • In March 2019, he launched Hub71, a special place for tech start-ups. So far, it has helped over 200 new companies, raised 4.5 billion AED (about 1.2 billion USD) in funding, and created more than 900 jobs.
  • He chairs the Emirates Genome Council. In March 2023, this council launched the National Genome Strategy. This plan will study the genetic makeup of Emiratis to help provide personalized healthcare.

Youth and Education Initiatives

Sheikh Khaled is very active in supporting young people and education.

  • In October 2021, he opened 42 Abu Dhabi, a coding school. It is the first campus in the Gulf region that is part of the international 42 Network of coding schools.
  • In August 2022, he asked for a new educational approach called the Graduate Competency Framework. This program teaches school students important skills like entrepreneurship, digital literacy, and financial literacy.
  • The next month, in September 2022, he launched the "RizeUp" scholarship program. This program will offer 6,000 Emirati students the chance to study in the US and Canada by 2028.

Sustainability and the Environment

Protecting the environment and promoting clean energy are important to Sheikh Khaled.

  • He supports Masdar's Youth 4 Sustainability program. This initiative helps young people gain skills for jobs in the green economy.
  • In October 2021, he launched a clean energy partnership between ADNOC and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC). This partnership provides some of ADNOC's power from nuclear and solar sources.
  • In February 2022, he launched the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative. This project aims to make Abu Dhabi a world leader in studying and protecting mangrove trees. This happened after a meeting with the UK's Prince William.

Art and Culture

Sheikh Khaled also supports art and culture in Abu Dhabi.

  • In September 2021, he met with architect Frank Gehry to discuss the progress of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi museum on Saadiyat Island. This museum will show modern and contemporary art.
  • In March 2022, he launched the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi project. This new museum and research center will be the largest of its kind in the region.
  • He supports Abu Dhabi Art, an annual art fair that brings together galleries and artists from around the world.
  • He also supports the Arabic Language Summit, where experts discuss the Arabic language, culture, and identity.

Improving Infrastructure

Sheikh Khaled has launched several large projects to improve the city's infrastructure.

  • He opened the Umm Yifeenah Bridge in February 2023. This 11 km highway connects important parts of the city, helping to reduce traffic.
  • In March 2023, he also launched a major new cancer treatment center, the Fatima bint Mubarak Center at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.

Diplomacy and International Relations

Sheikh Khaled plays a role in strengthening ties with other countries.

  • In May 2023, he visited Malaysia. He met with the Prime Minister and the King and received medals for his work in improving relations between the UAE and Malaysia.
  • In September 2022, he led a UAE group to the state funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo.
  • In December 2022, he attended the wedding of Kaesang Pangarep, the son of the president of Indonesia.
  • In March and May 2023, he attended the weddings of Princess Iman and Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan.

Personal Life

Sheikh Khaled is married to Sheikha Fatima bint Suroor Al Nahyan. They have two daughters and one son:

  • Shamma bint Khaled Al Nahyan (born October 10, 2011).
  • Mohammed bin Khaled Al Nahyan (born December 20, 2013).
  • Salama bint Khaled Al Nahyan (born December 20, 2013).

His brother is Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Theyab is also a member of the Executive Council and chairman of several important organizations, including the Crown Prince Court and Etihad Rail.
