Khalifa bin Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan (Arabic: ٱلشَّيْخ خَلِیْفَة بِن زَایِد بِن خَلِیْفَة آل نَهْيَان) was an important member of the Al Nahyan ruling family in Abu Dhabi. He was the oldest son of Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, who was the ruler of Abu Dhabi at the time.
Khalifa had four brothers who also became rulers of Abu Dhabi: Tahnoun, Hamdan, Saqr, and Sultan.
A Choice Not to Rule
When his father passed away in 1909, Khalifa was expected to become the next ruler. However, he chose not to take the throne. His mother was very worried about his safety if he became the ruler, and she asked him to refuse. Khalifa listened to her wishes.
Building a Historic Fort
During his father's time as ruler, Khalifa bin Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan is believed to have built Al-Muwaiji Fort. This fort is located in what is now the city of Al Ain. It was built in the early 1900s and stands as an important historical landmark.
Family's Future Role
Khalifa's family continued to play a big part in Abu Dhabi's history. His grandsons, including Hamdan, Mubarak, Tahnoun, and Saif, were strong supporters of Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Zayed bin Sultan later became the ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966. Khalifa's grandsons took on many important public jobs.
Khalifa bin Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan is also the great-grandfather of Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, who is a well-known figure today.
