Khantoke facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A khantoke (also spelled khantok) is a special kind of tray used as a small dining table. It's popular with the Lanna people in northern Thailand, as well as people from Laos and Isan (northeastern Thailand). Imagine a short, round table, usually made from wood, bamboo, or rattan. It's about 35 centimeters wide, but its size can change depending on how it's used. It's a bit like the daunglan table used in Burmese cuisine.

Khantoke Culture and Food

In northern Thailand, people often eat glutinous rice instead of the "fluffy" rice common in other parts of Thailand. Glutinous rice is also called "sticky rice" or "sweet rice." Thai people call it "Khao Neaw." This type of rice is grown mostly in Southeast and East Asia. When cooked, it becomes very sticky, which is why it's called "glutinous" – meaning glue-like. It doesn't contain gluten, though! Many different kinds of sticky rice exist.

A khantoke tray is perfect for holding many things. It can carry bowls of rice and other delicious foods. Sometimes, it also holds flowers, candles, and fresh fruit.

Dining with a Khantoke

Traditionally, people in northern Thailand sit on the floor when they eat. When a meal is ready, the food is placed into bowls or cups. These are then carefully arranged on the khantoke tray. This makes it easy to serve and share the meal.

Khantoke trays are used for everyday meals and for special events. They help keep food off the ground during big parties. You might see them at wedding parties, housewarming celebrations, or even temple festivals.

The types of food served on a khantoke can change. It depends on the occasion and the people eating. Khantoke dinners are a cherished tradition in northern Thailand. They are especially popular in cities like Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, and Lampang.

Khantoke for Special Ceremonies

For important ceremonies, a special area is set up for guests. This area often includes seats and khantoke tables.

  • Sometimes, a fence made of bamboo is built around the event. These bamboo pieces are joined together.
  • Banana or sugar cane plants might be placed in a circle, creating a maze-like path.
  • Music is an important part of these events. A band might play traditional instruments. These can include the salo (a stringed instrument), a flute, and drums.
  • When guests arrive, the host might offer them Jasmine flowers as a welcome.
