The Khtada River is a cool river in British Columbia, Canada. It flows into the bigger Skeena River. The Khtada River starts high up in the Coast Mountains. It flows south for about 26 kilometers (16 miles). It passes by places like Port Essington, Prince Rupert, and Terrace.
The area of land that drains into the Khtada River is called its watershed. It covers about 157 square kilometers (61 square miles). The river's average water flow is about 24.4 cubic meters per second. Part of the Khtada River's watershed is protected inside the Khtada Lake Conservancy. Some tall mountains like Cooper Peak and Spinel Peak are found near this watershed.
The Khtada River's watershed is also important to the Tsimshian people. It is part of the traditional lands of the Lax-kw'alaams First Nation and the Metlakatla First Nation.

Where the Khtada River Flows
The Khtada River begins in a lake that doesn't have a name. From there, it flows north and then northwest. It passes through Khtada Lake and Davis Lake. Finally, it reaches the Skeena River. This meeting point is just east of where the Scotia River also joins the Skeena.
Land Around the River
The land around the Khtada River's watershed has different types of natural cover. About 33% of the land is covered by evergreen trees. Another 28% is barren, meaning it has little or no plants. About 12% is covered by herbs, and 9% by snow or glaciers. Finally, about 6% of the land has shrubs.
First Nations Land
Two Indian reserves are located at the mouth of the Khtada River. These are Khtahda 10, which belongs to the Lax Kw'alaams and Metlakatla First Nations.
Animals in the Khtada River
The Khtada River is home to some interesting fish. It supports populations of steelhead trout. These fish are a type of rainbow trout that spend part of their lives in the ocean. The river also has eulachon, which are small, oily fish.
