Kilgard is a small area, or neighbourhood, located in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada. It sits a few kilometres east of the main part of Abbotsford. You can find it on the north side of the Trans-Canada Highway, right at the bottom of Sumas Mountain.
Discovering Kilgard
Kilgard is more than just a place on a map. It has an interesting history connected to making bricks. The name "Kilgard" itself comes from the old brick-making factory that used to be there.
A History of Bricks
Kilgard was once home to a special factory called a brickworks. This factory made a very strong type of brick known as fire brick. Fire bricks are super tough and can handle very high temperatures. They were used for things like lining furnaces or fireplaces.
Kilgard was like a "sister community" to another nearby place called Clayburn. Clayburn is also on Sumas Mountain, but on the northwest side. It also had a clay mine and its own brickworks. Both communities were important for producing bricks in the region.
First Nations Land
An important part of Kilgard is the Upper Sumas 6 Indian reserve. This land belongs to the Sumas First Nation. A First Nation is one of the many Indigenous peoples in Canada. Their reserve is a special area of land set aside for them.
