Where to Find the Kiltera Ogham Stones

The Kiltera Ogham Stones are located in a field in County Waterford. You can find them near the Munster Blackwater river. They are about 1.8 kilometers (1.1 miles) west of a village called Aglish.

History of the Ogham Stones

These amazing stones were carved a very long time ago. Experts believe they were made between the 6th and 7th centuries AD. That means they are over 1,300 years old! They give us a peek into ancient Irish history.

What Are Ogham Stones?

Ogham is the earliest known way of writing in Ireland. It uses lines and notches carved into the edges of stones. Each set of lines stands for a letter. Ogham stones were often used as memorials or to mark land. They usually tell us the name of a person or a family group.

The Larger Kiltera Stone

The bigger of the two Kiltera Ogham Stones is known as CIIC 266. It was carved around 500 to 700 AD. This stone is made of slate and has interesting quartz veins. It stands about 1.32 meters (4 feet 4 inches) tall.

The writing on this stone says: "COLLABOT MUCOI LUGA MAQI LOBACCONA". This means "Of Cóelub of the tribe of Lug, son of Lubchú." It tells us about an important person and their family.

The Smaller Kiltera Stone

The second stone, called CIIC 267, is also very old. It measures about 1.30 meters (4 feet 3 inches) tall. The inscription on this stone is shorter.

It reads: "MEDUSI MUCOI LUGA". This translates to "Medusi of the tribe of Lug." It also names a person and their tribe.

The Third Stone

There was once a third Ogham stone found at Kiltera (CIIC 268). It was carved between 540 and 600 AD. This stone had the word "CATTUVIR" carved on it. Later, this third stone was moved to the National Museum. This helps keep it safe for everyone to learn from.
