Kim Jip (1574–1656) was an important scholar, politician, teacher, and writer from Korea's Joseon period. He followed a way of thinking called Neo-Confucianism, which was a big part of life in Joseon Korea. Kim Jip also taught famous scholars like Song Si-yeol and Song Jun-gil.

Kim Jip's Family and Background

Kim Jip came from a well-known family during the Joseon era. His father was Kim Jang-saeng, who was also a very respected scholar. Kim Jip learned a lot from his father.

Parents and Grandparents

  • His grandfather was Kim Gye-hwi (1526 - 1582).
  • His father was Kim Jang-saeng (1548 - 1631).
  • His mother was Lady Jo of the Changnyeong Jo clan.

Brothers and Their Families

Kim Jip had several siblings.

  • His older brother was Kim Eun (1569 - 1592?). He went missing during a war called the Imjin War.
  • His younger brother was Kim Ban (1580 - 1640).
    • Kim Ban had several sons, including Kim Ik-ryeol, Kim Ik-hui, and Kim Ik-gyeom.
    • One of Kim Ban's grandsons was Kim Man-jung (1637 - 1692), who became a very famous writer.
    • Another great-grandniece was Queen Ingyeong (1661 - 1680), who became a queen of Joseon.

Kim Jip's Wives and Children

Kim Jip had two wives.

  • His first wife was Lady Yu of the Gigye Yu clan. They did not have any children.
  • His second wife was Lady Yi of the Deoksu Yi clan. She was the daughter of Yi I, another very famous scholar.
    • With Lady Yi, Kim Jip had two sons: Kim Ik-hyeong and Kim Ik-ryeon.
    • These sons later had many children, continuing the family line.
