Kim Winona was born in South Sioux City, Nebraska. Her birth name was Constance Elaine Mackey. Her parents were Elmer Marion Mackey and Elaine Grace Garvie Mackey Melior. As a girl, she lived in South Dakota. She lived on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. She also lived in Spokane, Washington.

Kim Winona was a member of the Santee Sioux people. Her mother worked to record Native American family histories.

Kim Winona's Acting Career

When Kim Winona first moved to Los Angeles, she worked as a secretary. She also worked as a model. She soon began her acting career.

On television, she had a regular role. She played Morning Star in the show Brave Eagle. This show aired from 1955 to 1956. Kim Winona said the writers made sure her character spoke normally. They did not use old-fashioned or incorrect ways of speaking. The show was praised for casting many Native American actors. It also had a Chippewa technical advisor. This person helped make sure the show was accurate. While on the show, she was a special guest. She was a marshal for the Hesperia Days parade in Hesperia, California.
