Kimberley Marie Wyman (born July 15, 1962) is an American politician. She served as the 15th Secretary of State of Washington from 2013 to 2021. The Secretary of State is a very important job in a state. This person helps manage elections and keeps official state records.
Kim Wyman left her role as Secretary of State on November 19, 2021. She joined the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. This agency works to keep important computer systems safe, including those used for elections. As of 2024, Kim Wyman is the last Republican to hold a statewide office in Washington. A statewide office means the person serves the entire state.
Early Life and Education
Kim Wyman went to college at California State University, Long Beach. After college, she lived in Germany for a while. While living there, she found it hard to vote in U.S. elections. This experience made her want to work in elections.
She later earned a special degree called a Master of Public Administration from Troy University. She also became one of the first public officials to be a Certified Elections/Registration Administrator. This shows her dedication to fair and secure elections.
Political Career
In 2001, Kim Wyman became the Auditor for Thurston County. The county auditor helps manage local finances and elections. She was elected to this job in 2002. She was reelected two more times, in 2006 and 2010.
In 2012, Wyman was elected as the Secretary of State for Washington. She won against her opponent from the Democratic Party. She was the only Republican elected to a statewide office in Washington that year. Many newspapers supported her, including The Seattle Times. They said she was good at working with both political parties. Even the Washington Education Association, a group that often supports Democrats, endorsed her.
Wyman was reelected in 2016 for her second term. She won with 55% of the votes. She was elected again in 2020 for a third term. On October 27, 2021, she announced she would leave her job. She wanted to work on election security for the Biden administration. Her resignation became official on November 19, 2021.
Personal Life
Kim Wyman lives in Lacey, Washington. She lives there with her husband, John, and their two children. She enjoys running and has completed several marathons. In March 2017, she was diagnosed with an early form of colon cancer.
