Kim Yong-il (Chosŏn'gŭl: 김영일; born May 2, 1944) is a politician from North Korea. He served as the Premier of North Korea from April 2007 to June 2010. The Premier is a very important leader, similar to a prime minister, who helps run the country's government.
Early Life and Career
Kim Yong-il joined the Korean People's Army in 1960. He served there for nine years until 1969. After his military service, he went to college. He studied at the Rajin University of Marine Transport. He became a navigation officer after graduating.
For 14 years, Kim Yong-il worked in the Ministry of Land and Marine Transport. He was an instructor and later a deputy director in one of its main offices. From 1994 until 2007, he was the Minister of Land and Marine Transport. During this time, he helped build new parts of the Ryongnam Ship Repair Factory. This factory was located near the city of Nampo, close to the Taedong River.
Becoming Premier
In April 2007, Kim Yong-il was chosen as the Premier of North Korea. He was elected by the 11th Supreme People's Assembly. This is a big meeting where important decisions are made for the country. He took over from the previous Premier, Pak Pong-ju. Kim Yong-il served as Premier for about three years. In June 2010, he was replaced by Choe Yong-rim.
What Did a Premier Do?
As Premier, Kim Yong-il was the head of the government in North Korea. This meant he had many important jobs. He was in charge of choosing ministers and vice-premiers. These choices then had to be approved by the Supreme People's Assembly.
The Premier was also responsible for the country's economy and its internal policies. Kim Yong-il's first big speech as Premier talked about the country's main ideas. He also spoke about the economy. He wanted to make sure that both heavy industries (like making machines) and light industries (like making clothes) grew. He also focused on agriculture to help solve food problems for the people.
Important Note
It is important not to confuse this Kim Yong-il with other people who have a similar name. There was another Kim Yong-il (born 1955) who was the son of Kim Il Sung and half-brother of Kim Jong Il. He is believed to have passed away in Germany in 2000. There is also another politician named Kim Yong-il who was a Deputy Foreign Minister.
