Kimberly Godwin is an American television executive and journalist. She has held important leadership roles in news. From 2007 to 2021, Godwin worked at CBS News. In April 2021, she became the president of ABC News. This made her the first Black woman to lead a major American TV news network. In May 2024, she announced she would be leaving ABC News.

Education and Early Life

Kimberly Godwin studied at Florida A&M University (FAMU). She graduated in 1984 with a degree in broadcast journalism. This means she learned how to report and produce news for TV and radio. Her studies were at the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication.

Career in News

Godwin has worked in many different cities. She held leadership jobs in newsrooms in places like New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Philadelphia, and Cleveland.

Working at CBS News (2007-2021)

Kimberly Godwin joined CBS News in 2007. During her time there, she had several important roles. She was a senior producer for the CBS Evening News. She also worked as an executive director focusing on development and diversity. Later, she became an executive vice president of News. This meant she helped manage many parts of the news division.

Leading ABC News (2021-2024)

In April 2021, Godwin was chosen to be the president of ABC News. She took over from James Goldston. This was a very important moment because she became the first Black woman to lead a major American TV news division.

When she started, Godwin focused on making positive changes to the work environment. She helped promote important people at Good Morning America. She also worked to make ABC News stronger in audio shows and special programs.

In 2024, it was reported that some staff felt the mood at ABC News had changed. After some discussions, Godwin announced on May 5, 2024, that she would resign from her role.

Kimberly Godwin has won many awards for her work in journalism. She has received six National News and Documentary Emmy Awards. She also won two Edward R. Murrow Awards. Other honors include an Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia Award and a Sigma Delta Chi Award. She also received the Ida B. Wells Award from the National Association of Black Journalists.
