Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Kinache (born around 1750, died around 1819) was an important leader of the Seminole people. He led Seminole fighters against the United States during the American Revolution and later during the First Seminole War. He was also known by many other names, including Kinhega, Kinheja, Kinhija, Opie Mico, Kapitca Mico, Capichee Mico, Tom Perryman, and Lye Drop Mico. His last name, Lye Drop Mico, meant "Far Off Warrior."

Kinache's Early Life and Leadership

Kinache was a respected leader among the Seminoles who lived near the Apalachicola River in the late 1700s. During the American Revolution, he chose to ally with Great Britain. After Britain lost the war, Kinache moved to a Miccosukee village. This village was located on the west side of Lake Miccosukee in western Florida. People thought of him as the "king of the Miccosukees."

Fighting in the Wars

Kinache was a brave leader who fought in several important conflicts.

War of 1812

During the War of 1812, Kinache reportedly fought alongside British forces. He was part of the battle against General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans.

Defending Negro Fort

In 1815, Kinache helped defend a place called Negro Fort. This fort was a strong base for Seminole people and Black individuals who had escaped slavery. When U.S. troops tried to capture the escaped slaves hiding there, Kinache helped protect the fort. This event is also known as the Battle of Negro Fort.

First Seminole War

During the First Seminole War, Kinache led Miccosukee fighters. They fought against American and Creek forces led by General William McIntosh. It was believed that Kinache was killed while bravely defending his village. However, he actually survived the battle. He later escaped to the Bahamas before returning to Florida in 1819. He passed away soon after his return.
