Carlton "King" Coleman (born January 20, 1932 – died September 11, 2010) was an American singer and musician. He was famous for his exciting rhythm and blues music. King Coleman was also a popular radio disc jockey and even an actor! He was known for his energetic performances and unique voice.

King Coleman was born in Tampa, Florida, in 1932. He became a well-known singer and performer. He was active in music and entertainment for many years, from 1947 until he passed away in 2010. He worked with many famous artists, including the legendary James Brown.
Music Star
King Coleman is best known for singing on the 1959 hit song, "(Do The) Mashed Potatoes". He recorded this fun dance song with James Brown's band. Throughout his career, King Coleman released many songs. These songs have been put together on special compilation albums. In 2003, an album called It's Dance Time was released by Norton Records, featuring many of his classic tunes. He continued to perform live even in his later years. For example, he headlined a big music event in New York City in 2005.

Besides singing, King Coleman was a very popular radio disc jockey (DJ). A DJ plays music and talks on the radio. He started his radio career in Tampa at WTMP. Later, he worked at WFEC and WMBM in Miami. In the late 1950s, he was one of the most listened-to DJs in Miami. In the mid-1960s, he had a popular show on WWRL in New York City. He also hosted rock and roll shows at theaters. In his later years, King Coleman hosted a six-hour radio show called "Nothing But Love." This show was on WMBM, which had become a gospel music station.

King Coleman also showed his talents as an actor. He appeared in several movies and television shows. Some of the films he was in include Claudine, Up the Academy, and Bad Boys II. He also appeared on the TV show Welcome Back Kotter.

King Coleman was also a father. His son, Tony Coleman, is a talented drummer and recording artist. Tony Coleman has often performed with another music legend, B.B. King.
