King Ecgbert School is a school for both boys and girls aged 11 to 18. It is located in the village of Dore, which is in the south-west of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England.

The current headteacher, Paul Haigh, started in January 2017. The school gets its name from King Egbert of Wessex. He was an important king who was recognized as the ruler of England in Dore back in 829.

The school first opened in 1957 on Furniss Avenue. Back then, it was only for girls. In 1969, it became a comprehensive school. This happened when Abbeydale Secondary School and Greystones Secondary School closed and joined with King Ecgbert. Many students come from local primary schools like Dore Primary and Totley Primary. Others come from the Sheaf valley area.

School Buildings and Facilities

A new three-storey building was finished in 2005 after two years of construction. Before this, the school was split into two parts called 'Mercia' and 'Wessex'. The new building has classrooms for students from Year 7 to Year 11. It also has a special area for Sixth Form students.

The school has a drama studio for plays and performances. There is also an astroturf field and an indoor sports hall. This sports hall is named the "Jessica Ennis Sports Hall." In March 2024, a brand-new building for the Sixth Form was opened by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield.

The school has received good reports from Ofsted. Ofsted checks how well schools are doing. In May 2013, the school's rating went from 'good' to 'outstanding'. King Ecgbert School used to be a special Technology College. It became an academy in 2012.

In 2013, the school's Sports Hall was renamed the 'Jessica Ennis Sports Hall'. This was to honor Jessica Ennis, who used to be a student there. She is an Olympic gold medallist and a very famous athlete.

The old 'Mercia' school site was taken down in 2005. New houses were built there by 2019. However, the school still uses the playing field next to where the old building was.
