Kirby was a small, quiet place in Big Horn County, Montana, in the United States. It wasn't a big city with its own government. Instead, it was an unincorporated community. This means it was a settlement without its own local government.
Kirby was located on the west side of Rosebud Creek. It sat about 3,878 feet (1,182 meters) above sea level. Not far from Kirby, about twelve miles south, you can find the Rosebud Battlefield State Park. This park is also near Rosebud Creek.
A Look Back: History
Where Was Kirby?
The area where Kirby once stood is found near Montana Highway 314 and Cache Creek Road. It was located in the beautiful valley of Rosebud Creek.
This spot was just east of the Crow Indian Reservation. It was also south of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation. These are lands set aside for Native American tribes.
The Post Office and Its End
For many years, Kirby had its own post office. It opened in 1895 and served the community until 1970. People living there would send and receive mail using the ZIP Code 59042.
Today, Kirby is known as a ghost town. This means most people have moved away, and only a few buildings are left. You might still see the old post office building standing there.
