History of Kirkwood
How Kirkwood Started
Kirkwood grew as a community of small homes called bungalows. These homes were built close to Kirkwood Lake, which is a part of the Cooper River. People from nearby big cities like Philadelphia and Camden loved Kirkwood. They used it as a summer getaway from the busy city life.
Homes from a Catalogue
Many of the first homes in Kirkwood were special. They were originally "Sears-Roebuck catalogue houses." This means people could order their house plans and materials from a catalogue, just like ordering clothes or tools! These homes were often built as vacation spots. Most of these early houses were constructed between 1915 and 1925.
