Discovering Kitsap Mall's Story
Have you ever wondered how a big shopping mall like Kitsap Mall got started? It took many years of planning before it finally opened its doors on August 1, 1985. When the mall first opened, it changed where most people in Kitsap County went to shop. Before, many people shopped in Bremerton, but after the mall arrived, Silverdale became the main shopping spot!
How Kitsap Mall Began
When Kitsap Mall first opened, it had three main anchor stores: Lamonts, Sears, and The Bon Marche. These big stores helped bring lots of shoppers to the mall.
Growing Bigger and Better
The mall quickly became very popular. Because it was so successful, Kitsap Mall almost doubled in size! In 1988, a new store called Mervyns was added. Then, in the 1990s, JCPenney joined the mall. Also, The Bon Marche store got much bigger, almost doubling its own size!
Changes Over the Years
Over time, some stores changed their names or left the mall.
- In 2000, Lamonts became a store called Gottschalks.
- The Bon Marche store changed its name to Bon-Macy's in 2003, and then simply to Macy's in 2005.
- In 2006, Gottschalks closed down. The building it was in was torn down. A brand new building was built in its place, which now holds Barnes & Noble and Cost Plus World Market.
- In 2007, Mervyns closed. A new building was built for Kohl's in that spot.
- The mall also got a fresh new look! From 2011 to 2012, the outside and inside of the mall were updated.
- In June 2013, a company called Starwood Capital Group bought Kitsap Mall.
- In 2016, Dick's Sporting Goods opened its doors at the mall.
Sears Says Goodbye
On August 31, 2019, it was announced that the Sears store at Kitsap Mall would be closing. This was part of a bigger plan to close many Sears stores across the country. The Kitsap Mall Sears store officially closed on October 20, 2019.
