Silverdale is a community in Kitsap County, Washington, in the United States. Even though people have tried many times to make Silverdale a city, it's still a community, not an official city. In 2020, about 20,733 people lived there. The government counts Silverdale as a "census-designated place" (CDP) for statistics.

Silverdale is known for having a good average income compared to other places in Washington.

Silverdale's History: Trying to Become a City

People in Silverdale have tried to make it an official city several times. The first attempts were in 1941 and 1985, but they didn't succeed.

In November 1999, there was another vote to become a city. It was a very close vote, losing by only five votes out of 4,000! There were some problems with that vote. Some people who shouldn't have voted did, and some who should have didn't.

Because of these issues, they voted again on February 1, 2000. This time, even more people said no to Silverdale becoming a city. Another try in February 2013 also failed, with 70% of voters saying no.

Where is Silverdale Located?

Silverdale is about 6 miles (10 km) south of the Naval Base Kitsap, which is a US Navy Trident Missile Base. It's also about 9 miles (14 km) northwest of Bremerton. The town of Poulsbo is the same distance north.

Silverdale is at the northern tip of Dyes Inlet. This inlet connects to Bremerton through Sinclair Inlet. It also connects to the Pacific Ocean through Port Orchard and Puget Sound. A small stream called Strawberry Creek flows through the older part of Silverdale.

The United States Census Bureau says that Silverdale covers a total area of about 13.6 square miles (35.2 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 12.6 square miles (32.7 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 1 square mile (2.5 square kilometers), is water. This means about 7% of Silverdale's area is water.

Silverdale has two main areas for shopping and businesses. One is "Old Town Silverdale," which is right by Dyes Inlet. This area has many salons, restaurants, and doctor's offices.

The other main business area is a bit north, near SR 3 and SR 303. This is where you'll find Kitsap Mall and other large stores.

Education in Silverdale

Public Schools

The Central Kitsap School District serves students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. In the 2022–2023 school year, about 11,243 students were in this district.

The district has two high schools for grades 9-12. It also has one secondary school for grades 7-12. There are three middle schools for grades 6-8 and 12 elementary schools. The district also offers special programs like home-school support. In 2021-2022, about 87% of students graduated, which is higher than the state average.

New School Buildings

On September 8, 2017, construction started on a new campus for Central Kitsap High School and Central Kitsap Middle School. The old school buildings were built a long time ago, in 1942 and 1959.

Middle school students were expected to move into their new building in Spring 2019. High school students were set to move into theirs in Fall 2019. The company Skanksa was hired to build the new campus for $77.9 million. The school district even sold the naming rights for the new stadium to Kitsap Credit Union for $500,000. So, the stadium is now called "Kitsap Credit Union Athletic Complex."
