History of Kittrell
Kittrell officially became a town in 1885. Its first mayor was David Outlaw, a merchant. Before it was a town, the area was known as Kittrell's Depot. This name came from a railroad depot (a train station) built there.
The land for the train station was given by George Kittrell and his wife, Elizabeth Boswell Kittrell. The first post office in the area opened in 1854, shortly after the train station started operating.
In 1868, a state law required counties to divide their land into smaller parts called townships. Kittrell Township was created in Granville County, which is one of the counties that Vance County was later formed from.
George Kittrell was a big landowner in Granville County. His grandfather, Captain Jonathan Kittrell, was an early settler in the area. He was a leader of a local group of soldiers (militia) in the 1760s and 1770s. Captain Kittrell also served as a magistrate (a type of judge) for the county.
Kittrell was once home to Kittrell College. Later, the campus became the Kittrell Job Corps Center, which helps young people get job training.
Several historic buildings in Kittrell are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include Ashburn Hall, Thomas Capehart House, Josiah Crudup House, and St. James Episcopal Church and Rectory.
In the past, Kittrell was also known for two fancy health hotels. These hotels, the Davis Hotel and Kittrell Springs Hotel, were popular during a time when people visited spas and health resorts in North Carolina.
