Klaus Doldinger (born May 12, 1936) is a famous German musician. He is best known for playing the saxophone in jazz music and for creating music for movies. He won an award called the Bavarian Film Award in 1997. Klaus Doldinger often works with German filmmaker Wolfgang Petersen, making music for many of his films.
Klaus Doldinger's Musical Journey
Klaus Doldinger was born in Berlin, Germany. In 1947, he started studying music at a special school in Düsseldorf. He first learned to play the piano and then the clarinet. He finished his studies in 1957.
Even while he was a student, Klaus Doldinger started playing music professionally. In 1953, he joined a German Dixieland band called The Feetwarmers. Dixieland is an early style of jazz music. He even recorded music with them in 1955. Later that year, he started his own group called Oscar's Trio. This group was inspired by the famous jazz musician Oscar Peterson.
During the 1960s, Klaus Doldinger became known as a tenor saxophonist. He played with many American jazz musicians who visited Germany. He also worked with popular music groups like Ian and the Zodiacs.
In 1971, Doldinger started his own jazz band called Passport. This band is still very popular in Germany today. Some people even called Passport the European version of the famous band Weather Report. Many talented musicians have played in Passport over the years.
Klaus Doldinger also created music for many movies. He wrote the music for the German submarine film Das Boot (1981). He also composed the music for The NeverEnding Story (1984). Both of these movies were directed by his friend Wolfgang Petersen. Doldinger also wrote the well-known theme song for the long-running German TV series Tatort (Crime scene).
Klaus Doldinger married Inge Beck in 1960. They have three children named Viola, Melanie, and Nicolas. Since 1968, they have lived in Icking, a small village in Bavaria, which is south of Munich.
