Klaus Doldinger (born on May 12, 1936) is a famous German musician. He is best known for playing the saxophone in jazz music. He also writes music for movies and TV shows. In 1997, he received a special award called the Bavarian Film Award. Klaus Doldinger often worked with the German filmmaker Wolfgang Petersen, creating music for many of his films.

Life and Music Journey

Klaus Doldinger was born in Berlin, Germany. When he was 11 years old, in 1947, he started studying music. He went to a music school in Düsseldorf. First, he learned to play the piano, and then he learned the clarinet. He finished his studies in 1957.

Early Bands and Jazz

Even while he was a student, Klaus Doldinger began playing music professionally. In 1953, he joined a German Dixieland band called The Feetwarmers. He even recorded music with them in 1955. Later that same year, he started his own group called 'Oscar's Trio'. This group was inspired by the famous jazz musician Oscar Peterson.

During the 1960s, Doldinger became a skilled tenor saxophonist. He played with many American jazz musicians who visited Germany. He also recorded his own music and worked with other bands.

In 1971, Klaus Doldinger started a jazz band called Passport. This band became very popular in Germany and is still successful today. Some people even called Passport the European version of the famous American jazz band, Weather Report.

Over the years, many talented musicians have played in Passport. Some of them include Peter O'Mara on guitar and Patrick Scales on bass. Other guest musicians also joined them for performances.

Music for Movies and TV

Klaus Doldinger is also famous for writing music for films. He composed the music for the German submarine movie Das Boot (1981). He also wrote the music for the fantasy film The NeverEnding Story (1984). Both of these movies were directed by his friend, Wolfgang Petersen.

He also created the well-known theme song for a long-running German-Austrian-Swiss TV series called Tatort.

Family Life

Klaus Doldinger married Inge Beck in 1960. They have three children named Viola, Melanie, and Nicolas. Since 1968, Klaus and Inge have lived in a small village called Icking. It is located south of Munich in Bavaria. In 2022, Klaus Doldinger released his autobiography, a book about his own life, called Made in Germany.
