Exploring Klemensker's Past
The village of Klemensker has a very long history. People might have lived here as far back as 3800 BC. This means it was settled thousands of years ago!
Ancient Discoveries
Many old runestones have been found in the village. These are stones with special ancient writings. Some of the roads in Klemensker were first written about in the 1300s. The village inn was mentioned in documents from 1548. The first homes around the church appeared in 1898. A school opened in 1906.
Changes Over Time
Klemensker used to have several dairies. Now, only one dairy remains. The old railway line that served the village closed down in 1953.
The Church and Its Name
Like many places on Bornholm, Klemensker gets its name from its church. The church is called Sankt Clemens Kirke. The part -ker in the name means "church" in the local dialect.
Sankt Clemens Kirke
Records show a St. Clement's Church existed here as early as 1335. The church we see today was finished in 1882. It stands on a hilltop, 114 meters (374 feet) above sea level. The inside of the church was updated in 1960. This work included art by Paul Høm.
Award-Winning Cheese from Bornholm
Bornholms Andelsmejeri is the only dairy on the island. It makes many different milk products and cheeses.
World Champion Cheese
One of their most famous products is Danish Blue cheese. This cheese won the World Cheese Champion award! It won twice, in 1980 and 1998, in Wisconsin, USA. Every year, the dairy's international branch, St. Clemens Food Products, sends about 4,500 tons of cheese all over the world.
Klemensker's Old Railway
Klemensker once had its own train station. It was part of the Allinge Railway.
Connecting Towns by Rail
This railway line connected Rønne to Allinge and Sandvig. Sandvig is a town near the famous Hammershus castle ruins. The train ran from 1913 to 1953.
