Knapp Lake is a beautiful natural lake located in western Noble County, Indiana. It's a small lake, but it's an important part of a larger system of lakes and wetlands in the area.

Knapp Lake's Neighbors

Knapp Lake is connected to several other lakes and waterways. It links directly to Little Bause Lake through a channel. It also connects to Little Knapp Lake to the south and southwest, and Moss Lake to the north.

  • Little Bause Lake has homes and buildings around its edges.
  • Little Knapp Lake, however, is mostly undeveloped, meaning there are no buildings or major changes by people.
  • Harper Lake and Gilbert Lake are also mostly undeveloped. They form the southern part of the Papakeechie watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a common point, like a lake or river. This water then flows northward from these lakes to Lake Wawasee through Moss Lake.

What the Shores Look Like

Most of the homes around Knapp Lake are found on its southwest, northeast, and north shores. The north shore even has five channels that were made by people. The northwest side of the lake is covered in forests. Beyond the areas where people live, you'll mostly find farmland to the east and south.

Protecting the Lake and Land

In 1999, an important step was taken to protect the natural beauty around Knapp Lake. The Wawasee Property Owners Association, with help from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, bought some land. They purchased about 13.52 acres of land and wetlands right on Knapp Lake. They also bought about 19.65 acres around Little Knapp Lake. This was done to help protect these natural areas for the future.
