Knotts Island is a special island with lots of marshland and a small community. It's partly in Currituck County, North Carolina and partly in Virginia Beach, Virginia, United States. The island is surrounded by water like the Currituck Sound, North Landing River, Back Bay, and Knotts Island Bay.

Knotts Island is home to the Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge, a protected area for wild animals. You can reach Knotts Island by road from Virginia Beach using Princess Anne Road. Or, you can take a free ferry from the mainland in Currituck, North Carolina. The island's ZIP Code is 27950.

Life on Knotts Island

Knotts Island is a popular place for fishing and hunting. Many special spots for duck hunting are found in the bay and on land. It's also home to the Swan Island Hunting Club. Famous artist Bob Timberlake loves to visit Knotts Island in the winter.

Long ago, people from a place called Wash Woods, Virginia moved to Knotts Island. Wash Woods is now a "ghost town," but their families still live on Knotts Island today.

Places to Visit

The island has an elementary school, two churches, a post office, and a community park.

You can find a few businesses on the island:

  • Knotts Island Market is the original general store.
  • Next to the market, there's a Dollar General store.
  • Pearl's Bay Villa, often called "Pearl's," is the only restaurant and bar.
  • There's only one place to stay overnight, an Airbnb on Knotts Island Bay.

The island also has Martin Farm and Winery. Here, you can enjoy waterfront views and taste wines. You can also pick your own peaches, apples, and muscadine grapes when they are in season.

Fun Events

Knotts Island hosts a fun Peach Festival every year in June. It's a great time to celebrate the island's delicious peaches!
