Knox, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Knox is a small, quiet place in southwest Polk County, Missouri. It's not a city or town with its own government, but rather an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and maybe a few businesses that are part of the larger county area. Knox is nestled in the beautiful Ozarks, a region known for its rolling hills and forests.

Where is Knox Located?

Knox is found in the southwest part of Missouri, right in the heart of the Ozarks. You can find it along Missouri Route W, which is a local road. It's about one mile east of the line that separates Polk County from Dade County.

This community is located roughly halfway between two other small places: Eudora to the east and Dadeville to the west. Knox is also near a small stream called King Branch, which flows into Turkey Creek. It's also about four miles south of the big and beautiful Stockton Lake, a popular spot for fishing and boating.

How Did Knox Get Its Name?

The community was originally called Nox. This name came from the Latin word nox, which means "night" or "dark." The name was chosen because of a nearby grove of black oak trees that created a lot of shade, making the area feel dark.

A post office was opened in Nox in 1901. However, it didn't stay open for very long, closing its operations just five years later in 1906.
