Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Kogluktogmiut (sometimes called Kogloktogmiut) were a group of Copper Inuit people. They lived in a specific area in the Canadian territory of Nunavut.

Who Were the Kogluktogmiut?

The Kogluktogmiut were one of several groups of Copper Inuit. These groups were known for living in the northern parts of Canada. They were defined by the places where they lived.

Where Did They Live?

The Kogluktogmiut lived near a special place called Bloody Falls. This waterfall is on the Coppermine River. In the Inuktitut language, "Kogluktok" means "it flows rapidly." It can also mean "it spurts like a strong stream." Bloody Falls is part of the Kugluk/Bloody Falls Territorial Park. This park is known for an important historical event that happened there a long time ago.

How They Connected with Other Groups

An anthropologist named Diamond Jenness studied the Copper Inuit. He found that the Kogluktogmiut often mixed with other nearby groups. These groups included the Akuliakattagmiut, Haneragmiut, Pallirmiut, Puiplirmiut, and Uallirgmiut (also known as the Kanianermiut). They connected through marriage and by families moving between different groups. This helped them stay strong and connected.
