Kolob Arch is a giant natural arch located in Zion National Park, Utah, United States. A natural arch is a rock formation shaped like a bridge or an arch, created by natural forces like wind and water erosion over millions of years. Kolob Arch is known for its impressive size.
Experts from the Natural Arch and Bridge Society (NABS) say it is the sixth-longest natural arch in the entire world. In 2006, they measured its span to be about 287.4 feet (87.6 meters) long. This makes it a little shorter than Landscape Arch, which is found in Arches National Park. Different ways of measuring arches can sometimes change their exact ranking.
What Makes Kolob Arch Special?
Kolob Arch is a truly amazing sight. It formed over a very long time as water and ice slowly wore away the softer rock layers. This left behind the harder rock in the shape of a huge arch. The arch stands very high above the ground. It is also quite close to a large cliffside, which it seems to frame perfectly. This creates a stunning natural window in the landscape.
How Can You Visit Kolob Arch?
Visiting Kolob Arch is an exciting adventure for hikers. There are two main hiking trails that lead to the arch. Each trail is about 7 miles (11 kilometers) long one way. This means a round trip hike to see the arch and return is about 14 miles (22 kilometers).
These trails offer a great way to explore the beautiful wilderness of Zion National Park. Hikers get to see amazing scenery along the way. For those who enjoy more extreme outdoor activities, the arch can also be reached through Ice Box Canyon. This is a special canyoneering route within the park. Canyoneering involves moving through canyons using techniques like hiking, climbing, and sometimes even swimming.
