Nationality Greek

Konstantinos Tsaldaris (Greek: Κωνσταντίνος Τσαλδάρης; 14 April 1884 – 15 November 1970) was an important Greek politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Greece two times.

Early Life and Education

Konstantinos Tsaldaris was born in Alexandria, which was part of Egypt at the time. He loved learning and studied law at the University of Athens in Greece. He also continued his studies in big cities like Berlin, London, and Florence. From 1915 to 1917, he worked as a local politician in a Greek region called a "prefecture."

Start of His Political Journey

In 1926, Konstantinos Tsaldaris was elected as a "deputy" for the first time. A deputy is like a representative in a country's parliament. He represented the area of Argolidocorinthia. He was part of the Freethinkers' Party.

Later, in 1928, he joined the People's Party. His uncle, Panagis Tsaldaris, was the leader of this party. Konstantinos served in his uncle's government from 1933 to 1935. He was first a Vice Minister of Transportation. Then, he became an Under-Secretary to the Prime Minister.

After his uncle passed away in 1936, Konstantinos became a leader in the People's Party. However, Greece soon came under a strict government called the dictatorship of Metaxas. This meant many political parties, including the People's Party, were stopped from operating.

Leading Greece After the War

After Greece was freed from occupation in 1944, the People's Party started up again. Konstantinos Tsaldaris became its new leader. In 1946, he led a group of parties called the "United Patriotic Party." They won the elections, and he became Prime Minister of Greece. His first term lasted from April 1946 to January 1947.

During his time as Prime Minister, his government held a special vote. This vote was called a "plebiscite." People voted on whether the king should return to rule Greece. This happened in August 1946.

Later Political Roles

From 1947 to 1949, Konstantinos Tsaldaris represented Greece at the UN General Assembly. This is a big meeting where countries discuss world issues. He also served as Deputy Prime Minister in several governments. He worked with Prime Ministers Dimitrios Maximos, Themistoklis Sophoulis, and Alexandros Diomidis.

He became Prime Minister for a second time in August 1947. This term was shorter, lasting until September of the same year.

End of His Career

In the early 1950s, a new political party became very popular in Greece. This was the Greek Rally party, led by Alexandros Papagos. Because of this, the People's Party lost many of its supporters. Konstantinos Tsaldaris did not win a seat in the 1952 election.

He was elected to Parliament again in 1956 with a different party. However, in 1958, he tried to be elected as the head of the Union of Populars but was not successful. Soon after, he decided to retire from politics. Konstantinos Tsaldaris passed away in Athens in 1970.
