History of Kool-Aid

Kool-Aid was created by Edwin Perkins in Hastings, Nebraska. He did all his experiments in his mother's kitchen! Before it was Kool-Aid, it was a liquid drink called Fruit Smack.
To save money on shipping, Perkins found a way to remove the liquid from Fruit Smack in 1927. This left only a powder, which he named Kool-Aid. In 1931, Perkins moved his production to Chicago. Later, in 1953, Kool-Aid was sold to another large company called General Foods.
Today, Hastings, Nebraska, still celebrates Kool-Aid's invention. They have a yearly summer festival called Kool-Aid Days. It happens on the second weekend in August. Kool-Aid is even known as Nebraska's official soft drink!
How Kool-Aid is Made
Kool-Aid is usually sold as a powder. You can find it in small packets or tubs. To make the drink, you mix the powder with sugar and water. People usually make a whole pitcher at once. It tastes best served with ice or chilled in the refrigerator. There are also some sugar-free versions available.
You can also buy Kool-Aid in other forms. There are single-serving packets that you can pour into bottled water. You can also find small plastic bottles with the drink already mixed. Sometimes, Kool-Aid is even used to make fun things like ice cream or fizzing tablets.
The bright colors in Kool-Aid can stain things. Because of this, it can be used as a dye. People have used it to color hair or wool.
Kool-Aid Man: The Mascot
The Kool-Aid Man is the famous mascot for Kool-Aid. He is a giant, friendly pitcher filled with Kool-Aid. This character was first introduced shortly after General Foods bought the brand in the 1950s.
In TV commercials and ads, the Kool-Aid Man was known for bursting through walls. He would surprise children in their homes and then make them a batch of Kool-Aid. His famous catchphrase is "Oh, yeah!". In 2013, Kraft updated the Kool-Aid Man. They made him a computer-generated character who acts like a celebrity trying to show he's just a regular guy.
