Kosmosdale, Louisville facts for kids
Kosmosdale is a neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky. It is located in the southwest part of the city, along Dixie Highway. This area is named after the Kosmos Cement Company. This company has been owned by different groups over the years. It was bought by the Flintkote Corporation in 1957. Today, Eagle Materials Inc. runs the company, after buying it from CEMEX USA in 2020.
The Big Tornado of 1974
On April 3, 1974, a very strong tornado hit the southwest part of Jefferson County, Kentucky. This tornado was part of a huge weather event called the 1974 Super Outbreak. It was an F4 tornado, which means it was incredibly powerful.
This tornado caused a lot of damage. Sadly, three people lost their lives. Also, 207 people in Louisville were hurt. This storm came from the same giant thunderstorm that created an even stronger F5 tornado in Brandenburg, Kentucky.
