Kossuth William Duncan (born 29 July 1857, died 30 June 1919) was an important person in South Australia. He worked as a miller, which means he helped turn grain into flour. He was also a politician, meaning he helped make decisions for the community.

He served in the government in different roles. He was a member of the South Australian Legislative Council from 1900 to 1902. Later, he was part of the South Australian House of Assembly from 1907 to 1910. He even became the mayor of Corporate Town of Laura from 1913 to 1914.

Life and Career

Kossuth W. Duncan was born in Hindmarsh. He was the second son of R. B. Duncan. His father came to South Australia in 1855 on a ship called the Fitzjames.

Early Work in Milling

When he was young, Kossuth started working in flour milling. He first joined the company of Magarey & Co.. After that, he worked for the Adelaide Milling Company for 20 years.

He became a manager for the company in Port Pirie. While there, he also served as a member of the Port Pirie Council. He also spent two years working in Port Augusta.

Becoming a Politician

Kossuth W. Duncan served in the government of South Australia. He was a member of the South Australian Legislative Council for two years. He represented the Northern District.

Later, he became a member of the South Australian House of Assembly. He represented the District of Stanley. These roles meant he helped make laws and decisions for the state.

Life in Laura

Around 1902, Kossuth moved to Laura. There, he partnered with Joseph King from Georgetown. Together, they ran the Laura flour mill under the name King & Duncan.

In 1911, he was chosen to represent North Ward in the Corporate Town of Laura. He was the only person nominated, so he won easily. He then served as the Mayor of Laura from 1913 to 1914. Later in his life, he lived in Dulwich Avenue in Dulwich, South Australia.

Other Interests

Kossuth W. Duncan was an active member of the Church of Christ. From 1914, he also served as a trustee for the State Bank. This meant he helped manage the bank's funds and operations.

Family Life

Kossuth William Duncan married Mary Ann Turton on 12 November 1879. They had several children. Their children included K. R. Duncan, Mrs L. C. Walter, Mrs H. R. Hammill, and Mrs J. Weston. Mrs L. C. Walter lived in Stone Hut. Mrs H. R. Hammill lived in Laura, and Mrs J. Weston lived in Glenside.
