Kotagiri is a cool hill station and a small area called a taluk. It is located in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, a state in India. The name 'Kotagiri' means 'mountains of the Kotas'. This refers to the "Kota" tribes who traditionally lived in the Nilgiri hills. It used to be known as 'Kota-keri' or 'Kota-gherry'.
This town is built among many hills and valleys. It is one of the biggest hill stations in the Nilgiri Mountains. Kotagiri is about 1,950 meters (6,400 feet) above sea level. It was a popular summer spot for the Madras Presidency a long time ago. A person named John Sullivan found the town in 1819. He visited a nearby village called Dhimbatty. Kotagiri has the third coldest weather in South India, after Ooty and Kodaikanal.
