The Koumala War Memorial is a special place in Koumala, Australia. It is located on Mumby Street. This memorial was built in 1959 to remember people who served in wars. It is also listed on the Queensland Heritage Register, which means it is an important historical site.

Remembering Our Heroes

The Koumala War Memorial was put up in 1959. People in the community helped raise money for it. This was done through public donations, organized by the local branch of the RSL. The RSL is an organization for people who have served in the military.

The memorial honors all those who served in different wars. It especially remembers six local men from Koumala. These men bravely gave their lives for their country during World War II. To remember them, schoolchildren planted six small trees. Each tree stands for one of these brave men. There were temporary signs with their names next to the trees. The plan was to replace these with permanent signs later on.

What the Memorial Looks Like

The Koumala War Memorial stands in a quiet area next to the Koumala State School. It faces Bull Street. A low wire fence with white metal frames surrounds the area. Behind the memorial, there is a flagpole where flags can be flown.

The memorial itself is made of white painted concrete. It has a base with two steps. From this base, a tall, thin stone pillar called an obelisk rises up. The obelisk sits on a square block called a plinth. On the front of this plinth, there is a special plaque. This plaque has a message from the people of Koumala. At the very top of the obelisk, there is a small Latin cross.

Messages on the Memorial

The memorial has several important messages carved into plaques.

One plaque says: In Memory Of Those Who Gave Their Lives In Defence Of Our Country

Another plaque includes a famous line often used to remember soldiers: At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them Their Name Liveth For Evermore This plaque was dedicated in 2006.

A third plaque explains who built the memorial: Erected By THE CITIZENS OF KOUMALA & DISTRICT In Memory Of Those Who Made The Supreme Sacrifice In Defence Of Their Country.
